Safely, We Are Reopening

Safely, We Are Reopening

What an extraordinary day, week, and month it’s been for every single one of us. We feel for all of you, no matter how much or little this time in history has affected you. The COVID-19 pandemic, the recent protests for justice over what happened to #georgefloyd last week in Minneapolis, all of it.

We also know our taproom and community space is the best tool we have to get people talking, about best ways to progress and make the world a better place. No matter how many crowler cans we sell you to go, that sense of social entanglement can never be instilled. It’s been so hard to see you come and go without the chance to say hi and chat.

So with that, it’s our pleasure to announce that we will officially be resuming limited taproom and patio services, coming Wednesday, June 10th. Click here to reserve your spot now, and please - review, follow, and promote the very real CDC and Minnesota Stay Safe Plans still in effect as we fight this pandemic. Reservations are required and safety will be our number one priority upon returning.

Stay safe and well, MN.

On ahead,

How We Can All Help

How We Can All Help

It’s taken us the better part of a week, to even begin to understand and speak to what transpired in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and now much of the globe, these past few days. Neighborhoods, where some of our owners live, have been destroyed into rubble and ash. What happened to George Floyd was a tragedy for all of our communities, and will hopefully ensue as a vital turning point as we seek justice for him and for all. We’re heart broken, sickened, and angry like many of you, but today we are focused and committed on helping our fellow Minnesotans. Small business owners who were looted and burned (a few of our retail partners included), peaceful protesters, displaced families, the elderly, and those at risk from COVID-19 to name a few, need us. We are all one, or should be anyway, and while this is just the first step on the long road of better educating, communicating, and reforming the issues at hand, people need our support today.

Here are a few was you can get involved:

  1. Bring Necessary Provisions to Portage Brewing

Starting today, Portage is a drop site for necessary provisions, like: medical supplies, non-perishable food items, baby food/diapers/wipes, feminine hygiene products, brooms, shovels, buckets, gloves, garbage bags, and face coverings (such as bandanas). Over the course of this week, local supporters will be delivering these supplies where they need to go. You can drop off items, anytime between 10AM-5PM this week.

  2. Make Donations

We’ve spent the weekend researching donation options focused on neighborhood cleanup and rebuild efforts, supply collection and delivery, and more. We encourage each of you to do the same, and give appropriately if you can:

  • We Love Lake Street - Collecting donations to aid the rebuild of the East Lake Street Neighborhood

  • Neighbors United Funding Collaborative - Collecting donations to aid the rebuild of the Union Park and Hamline-Midway Neighborhoods

  • George Floyd Memorial Fund - This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.

  • Support The Cities - General provision collection and delivery non-profit, helping to aid those in need during the protest cleanup

  • Northstar Health Collective - Providing healthcare services during times of protest.

We love our state, and all of the beautiful people who call Minnesota home. It’s time to better understand one another, and actively show interest in those who don’t share our race, ethnicity, or belief systems, by simply meeting halfway to say hello and hear each other out. We all want to be heard, cared for, and welcomed into our communities. Be safe and well, everyone.

On ahead.

Help Us: Free The 4 Pack

Help Us: Free The 4 Pack

By now you may have seen this graphic making an appearance on your social feeds. Trust us when we say, it’s for a good cause. There is currently a law in Minnesota preventing breweries from selling a wider range of packaging options from our taprooms. Ever wonder why you’re only able to buy 64 or 25.4 ounce crowlers or growlers? Ever wonder why we can’t sell 16 ounce cans directly to you from our brewery? There is a legacy law in Minnesota that continues to put a damper on our abilities to grow and deliver the most ideal format for fresh, shelf stable beer.

Especially now, when revenues are fractions of what they were before COVID, we’re all looking for additional ways to survive. We have a very legitimate fear that the boom in local MN craft brewing, which took almost a decade to cultivate, could be dismantled in just a few short weeks.

Take Action:

  1. Find and contact your legislators

  2. Get involved with the MN Craft Brewers Guild

Juicetree Drops + Curbside Ordering

Juicetree Drops + Curbside Ordering

Hello from North Country. We want to start first by thanking each of you, the family members, friends, fans, and liquor store partners, who have showed us relentless support over these past two weeks. You truly have turned a dire situation into something we may actually be able to manage for awhile. As I'm sure you can imagine, closing our taproom indefinitely has brought a series of logistical and financial challenges to our doors, but we're adapting to increase regional can distribution and a curbside taproom services. Please continue stay tuned for important beer releases, COVID-19 updates as they relate to our business, and ways we can all stay connected. We wish you all good health, and a refrigerator stocked full of tasty craft beer. On ahead.

CURBSIDE BEER ORDERING

Screen Shot 2020-03-26 at 3.28.12 PM.png

Our curbside service is up and running, and with a few small changes, that will go into effect tomorrow. Please follow the process for ordering below:

  1. All orders, for both crowler cans and merchandise, should be made online, here. Customers may purchase cans upon arrival, but we're encouraging pre-orders as they help us prepare for your arrival, and better practice social distancing. Save your receipt from Squarespace, and bring it with you to the taproom.

  2. Once arriving to the brewery, please feel free to stay in your vehicle and call us at (218) 547-6217. Give us your order number, and we'll grab your cans and run them out to you. Simply show us your order confirmation, and your valid ID verifying you're 21+. Then, off you go.

Please note, we will no longer be filling growlers, so please leave those at home. Shoot us an email at hello@portagebeer.com if you have any questions pertaining to an order.

JUICETREE DROPS FRIDAY

Juicetree returns, with a series of small changes, making this version more tropical than all previous attempts. Now included in this recipe, are Sultana hops which can be explained perfectly as a glass of straight pineapple juice. The alcoholic bite we all know and love is still there, making this a very balanced New England DIPA. Available for pre-order now, here, and pick-up tomorrow at 3PM.

COVID-19 Update: Minnesota Craft Breweries Are Essential

Amidst the upcoming shelter-in-place executive order, news has been passed to us, relating to our ability to continue operating. In the safest manner possible, we plan to continue brewing and producing on a limited scale. This notice was sent out to us yesterday, from the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild:

"Breweries can stay open! Breweries have been deemed an essential business, so you can continue to sell beer-to-go under current guidelines (curbside & delivery of crowlers, 750ml bottles, and growlers). The Executive Order follows federal guidance that allows beverage manufacturers to remain open and distributing their products, and specifically clarifies that the term "beverages" includes alcoholic beverages. The restrictions on places of public accommodation adopted in Executive Orders 20-04 and 20-18, which required taprooms to close, remain in effect and have been extended to May 1, 2020."

COVID-19 UPDATES

COVID-19 UPDATES

We love each and every one of you, which is why this next bit of information is vitally important that we cover and keep up on. In light of the evolving COVID-19 developments, we feel it’s our duty to prioritize precautionary measures, that prevent the spread of this virus. Our management team especially, will continue to be glued to CDC updates and recommendations, and will take all necessary measures to ensure that our customers and employees are safe. Please direct any questions related to this issue, to hello@portagebeer.com.

TAPROOM CLOSURE + CURBSIDE CROWLER PICK-UP

DSC_0282.jpg

We’re sad to share that due to a recent statewide mandate, our taproom is temporarily closed. In the midst of all the bad though, we want to let you know there is some good news for Portage fans - you can now order beer online for curbside pick-up. Please click the link below for updated availability:

We will be adjusting our hours to allow for this, so please continue to check social media, and our website for updates. All participants must be 21+ and have a digital copy of your order confirmation.

We understand this is an extremely challenging time for everyone, including small businesses. As we continue weather this it’s important we all support each other. Be safe and well everyone. On ahead.

OTHER WAYS TO SHOW SUPPORT

If beer isn’t your thing, we still have a few ways you can support us. We still have solid inventory of hats, shirts, gift cards, and other swag, and encourage you to jump on over to online store for those items.

From all of us at Portage, stay healthy and well during this difficult time. Please, take all CDC, state, and local prevention measures to ensure a short and fast recovery from COVID-19.

On Ahead,

Jeff Vondenkamp

Fruvail NEIPA / Release Details

We invented our first portmanteau folks. Woo. It’s complex and full of reason, and we’re excited to share it with you. Introducing Fruvail, a NEIPA recipe we’ve been planning since before the fire, and one we’re real excited about.

Taking our latest base recipe and focusing it heavily on the tropical aromatics of Sabro and Citra hops. What we landed with was a wonderful combo of pineapple juice and coconut pulp on the nose, followed by a medium bodied base of flaked wheat and oats.

Can and draft release in our Walker taproom only for this one folks - 2PM, this Friday. Limited quantities available, see you then.

On ahead.

Paradise Anyway DIPA / Release Details

Paradise Anyway DIPA / Release Details

paradise anyway promo@4x.png

That getting lost in the woods kind of beer, where everything looks unfamiliar and untouched, and no manmade sound can be heard for miles. This one’s for you, the type 2 fun type, who works all day outside, only to be rewarded with a nice DIPA, around a raging campfire, in the dead of winter. Introducing Paradise Anyway, an 8.4% DIPA brewed with flaked oats and wheat for a thick malt base, allowing a large charge of Sabro, Mosaic, and Citra hops to shine. Big notes of coconut pulp, white oak, and fresh tropical fruits on the nose. Label artwork from Libby of Small Batch Crafted Pins. This Friday at 2PM is the day you can get your hands on it - pints and crowlers only. No growler fills will be available. Plan to see more designs of this kind, in coming months. On ahead.

2019, Year In Review

2019, Year In Review

It’s that time of year again - time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. For all of us at Portage, 2019 brought the opportunity to begin again, thanks to the incredible support that poured in since the fire.

Despite the loss that kicked off our year, we spent the last 12 months rebuilding, collabing, and having some pretty fantastic moments with our good friends, family and the beer community.

HERE'S A LOOK BACK AT OUR YEAR:

unnamed (2).png

JAN 6 - THE FIRE
We lost our taproom and brewery to a stupid fire. Luckily no one was hurt, but we all felt the loss of our building deeply. We wasted no time getting back to work and figuring out how to best rebuild a new home for our brewery on the shores of Leech Lake.

unnamed (3).png

FEB 6 - BENT PADDLE
SCANDAHAZIAN COLLAB RELEASE

We love you Bent Paddle. One month after the fire, our friends in Duluth re-released a prior collab - Scandahazian, with donations being raised for our effort at their official release party. We danced, drank some wonderful DIPA, and appreciate everything they've done for us.

unnamed (4).png

FEB 16 - MODIST BREWING COLLAB
Double Sun Protection Factor, a collaboration with Modist Brewing, was released. Not only did our friends at Modist offer to rebrew our Sun Protection Factor collaboration, this time they also donated all sales to our rebuild effort. Wow. You guys are truly the best and we are forever grateful.

unnamed (5).png

APR 29 - FINALIZED PORTAGE 2.0 PLANS
One of the best days since the fire, our architects onsite visit for final review of Portage 2.0. Linden Group Architects were integral in getting our ideas and vision for the space down on paper.

We can't thank them enough for this beautiful space we get to spend every day in.

unnamed (6).png

APR 25 - BACK CHANNEL COLLAB

Amidst our inability to brew commercially during the rebuild, we were gifted with time and friends to help us pursue interesting and innovative experiments. And what better way to test one of those out, than with an old friend who inspired me to take homebrewing seriously, and the head brewer at Back Channel, Marc Makarem. Together we sat down to brew up the very sessionable Sangsue NEPA.

unnamed (7).png

MAY 1 - BROKE GROUND ON REBUILD
Waiting for winter to vacate was among the most challenging times for our team - as the ground was frozen solid, and prevented any of our construction teams from beginning work.

This day marked the beginning of it all, as footings started to form.

unnamed (8).png

MAY 31 - BLACKSTACK COLLAB
Midnight Marauders was let lose into the world.

In this recipe, we pushed everything to the max - showcasing a rich and malty stout base, beneath layers of chilis, cacao nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and cocoa powder.

Thanks for having us BlackStack.

unnamed (9).png

JUN 24 - HIT INDIEGOGO GOAL
We did it. We successfully funded our #rebuildportage Indiegogo Campaign, with only a few hours to spare. Big thanks to all of YOU, the 370 Indiegogo backers and the 101 supporters from GoFundMe who helped us raise $36,433 - which freed us up with space to design our taproom and product experiences for a better Portage 2.0.

unnamed (10).png

JUL 21 - RARE BEER PICNIC / JUNKYARD COLLAB
Thanks to our friends at Junkyard Brewing, we were able to attend and pour at our favorite Rare Beer Picnic again. This year, brought to you by Junkyard and Portage, a barrel fermented table beer, with a mixed pitch of brettanomyces yeast and bacteria, which was then refermented on fresh apricots and peaches.

unnamed (11).png

AUG 4 - INCAHOOTS / FAIRSTATE COLLAB
We’ve been attending Incahoots as purveyors since 2015, but this year we teamed up with Fair State Brewing, against a parking lot of other fantastic breweries, to bring you a peach tea infused table beer that was keg conditioned for all the wonderful tiny bubbles.

unnamed (12).png

AUG 13 - FUNK FACTORY COLLAB
We can’t thank the crew at Funk Factory Geuzeria and Working Draft Beer enough for hosting us. We reached out to these guys a few months back with an idea to brew a spontaneous beer the only way we know how, with heaps of wild flowers for inoculation. We spent the morning harvesting black eyed susans, goldenrod, sunflowers, and a bunch of other pollinating flowers - Wisconsin is beautiful.

unnamed (13).png

SEP 7 - NEW TANKS DELIVERED
Best day yet. Tanks started arriving back to the brewery. Doubling our brewhouse and cellar capacity meant a fast lesson about engineering and moving, but it’s home and safe. So much fun and the energy around Walker and the brewery continues to gain positive momentum as we plan for our reopening.

unnamed (14).png

OCT 18 - FIRST BREW DAY
Our brewhouse and wood cellar are complete and we were able to brew our first beer in the new space.

We can’t express what this means to our team and we look forward to serving you all again.

unnamed (15).png

NOV 30 - SOFT OPENING
328 days since the fire that destroyed our brewery we completed our rebuild and opened our doors for a very soft opening.

Many locals and a few out of town friends made it in to see our space for the first time.

unnamed (16).png

DEC 7 - WE ARE OFFICIALLY REOPEN!
To end our year, we finally reopened our doors and were completely humbled by the crew that showed up.

Thank you to all our friends, family, staff, volunteers, and other supporters who came from near and far to celebrate this day with us.

We love you and are forever grateful.

As we look forward to 2020, we’re excited to return to what we do best, advancing our craft with engaging beers. We’ve always led with this, and will continue to focus on pushing the limits of lager, farmhouse, and experimental brewing. 2019 gave us the space to learn, tinker, and refocus Portage 2.0’s approach, and we can’t wait to share it all with you. Happy New Year, friends. On ahead.

On Ahead Crowdfunding Campaign

On Ahead Crowdfunding Campaign

5c33a1d80c235.image.png

To your left is the sight of our brewery on January 6th. Below is the future for Portage. It's been a hard few months for everyone, but we're excited to announce today that ground has officially broken to #rebuildportage. While we can't wait to serve you all again, help is still needed to get us there. As building costs exceed our insurance coverage, we're still short on required capital to complete the project. Click the link below to view our campaign.

Thanks to various donors, supporters, and project leaders, we've started to rebuild our business. The past three months have certainly gifted us with time and headspace to intentionally redesign our organization, space, and vision for the future. Portage will return with a refined focus on efficiency within our brewing process, farmhouse and experimental brewing, and an overhauled tasting room experience. To put it simply, our plans for Portage 2.0 are air tight. The big challenge left for us is raising enough capital to rebuild responsibly. Due to increases in new material costs and property taxes, and after halving our proposed square footage, we're still short. It is our hope through this campaign to raise a minimum of $30,000 to complete our plans.

A Simple Approach

Every dollar you invest here will directly fund an improved tasting room or beer production experience. Period. The mission of this isn't to allot dollars for things out of mind and out of sight, but tangible areas of our business that you can actually touch.

Whether investments into taproom design, or equipment for our cellar to improve output of wood aged beers, we will use this money to deliver you with a better product experience. Beyond, the gifts at each perk level have also been designed to represent the investment given.

Portage 2.0 Plans, Unveiled

We're lucky to have a friend and architect with experience designing breweries (heard of ThreeFloyds Brewing?). Linden Group in Chicago has been the perfect fit for our crew - forcing us to rethink every inch and corner of our original process, with a focus on designing for a better customer experience and production efficiencies. You'll find schematics below that help us celebrate Portage's past, and plan for the future. Proposed completion of Portage 2.0 is around the middle of October.

Community Funded

For many reasons, we've chosen crowdfunding as our method of fundraising, over traditional means. Rather than searching for new investors, or taking out additional loans, we want to engage our community and keep the reigns on our vision and process. Lots of people have already come forward to help, while others still want to get involved. This campaign will put the last few dollars we need in place to finish our brewery. Cheers for helping us #rebuildportage.

Already Donated?

To anyone who's already donated through GoFundMe, another fundraiser, or a collaboration, you're gift amounts will be honored at the perk levels below (this does not include silent auction recipients). Example: if you donated $100 on GoFundMe, you could be awarded any of the perks below up to that amount, but you cannot apply your $100 to a higher perk level and would need to purchase that at the full amount. Please email us directly at hello@portagebeer.com to claim or discuss perks. Once the perk has closed or expired, you cannot redeem the item.

On ahead,

Jeff Vondenkamp
Co-Owner, Head Brewer and Designer

Fire Update

Fire Update

On January 6th, 2019, we experienced a catastrophic fire that destroyed our downtown Walker facility. Thanks to the thirty some volunteer firefighters in the area, the loss was limited to our property and no one was injured. For now, Portage is closed for buisiness, but we will be back and we will #rebuildportage.

Efforts have already begun to take shape, as we begin the early stages of rebuilding. A community event was held on Friday, January 11th, to celebrate our wonderful community. We thank Chase On The Lake Resort, Corey Medina & Brothers, Paul Nye, Jeff Menten, Keith Thunem, Lucky Moose Bar and Grill, Bensons Eating and Drinking Emporium, and Piggy BBQ for throwing us one heckuva party. We were able to pour our last few kegs of beer, including the Butte County Resilence IPA, which is an international brewing project to help fun the suffering losses of the Camp Fire in California. $700 were raised for that project, from the event.

We'd also like to thank Northern Namaste Yoga, Lynn Mineer, Steve Reiter, and all of the silent auction donors for a donation based yoga session. It was wonderful to take a break from the madness and enjoy a night of reflection.

We'd also like to thank the many Minnesota breweries, like Modist BrewingBemidji BrewingBent Paddle Brewing, and Aegir Brewing, that have stepped forward with ideas to help out. In coming months, we'll be gypsy brewing and collaborating with many of these great community members.

We've also decided to approve a GoFundMe to Rebuild Portage. Coming from the Friends of Portage, comprised of locals, employees, and fans afar, this fund is designed to help us with our redesign efforts specifically. Extraneous design costs beyond what insurance is likely to cover, like architectural plans and further investments into the spaces of our dream facility, are areas they've offered to focus. Thank you Simon Whitehead, Scott Hoefler, and Randall Morrison for heading this project up. Please visit the link below if you're interested in helping out with that. We're also taking suggestions for additions and other ideas in the comment box of that page. Let the ideas begin.

Halloween Release: Mad at Midnight

Halloween Release: Mad at Midnight

Mad at Midnight Promo@4x.png

A day of darkness, approaches, and we want to make sure you're ready. Dropping this Wednesday, throughout the state of Minnesota, is our second statewide release, Mad at Midnight. In this imperial wheat porter, we layered the most complementary ingredients to reenact the famous mole chocolate. Beginning with a complex malt bill of stout, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, below a layer of flaked wheat for added creaminess, below pounds of ancho chilis, ceylon cinnamon, toasted cacao nibs, and vanilla beans - this beer is well suited for a cool night on your stoop, handing out candy - or howling at the moon if you're into that kind of thing.

Mad at Midnight will be releasing across multiple beer stores, as well as our Walker taproom on Wednesday, October 31st. Locations and times for the drop will vary, so please follow our story on Instagram and Facebook. Here's where you can find it:

- Portage Brewing Company Taproom (4PM)
- Edina Liquor (all 3 locations)
- The Ale Jail

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5TH

Say hello to our very first, statewide beer release. This IPA was conceived from what we believe is the juiciest combination of IPA friendly ingredients. Pounds of blueberries, wildflower honey, El Dorado hops, vanilla beans, and milk sugar went into this recipe - constructing a purple, hazy treat of sweet berries and stone fruit.

We'll be co-releasing this beer across multiple beer stores, bars, and are even throwing a release tap takeover party at Stanley's Northeast Bar Room, on Friday, October 5th, at 4PM. Be sure to come by and sample Portage Beer for the first time in MSP. Plan ahead, here's where you can find Blueberry Honey:

Take 5: The Week of Releases

Take 5: The Week of Releases

It's been awhile since we last sat down to reflect, write, and share updates with you. All of the silence has been leading up to this, a week full of new beers for you to try. Staring on Friday, July 29th, we kick off what we're calling it the Week of Releases. Being that it's the 4th of July, and nearly all of our favorite customers are North, we want to give everyone a chance at these five beers.

This past month has been full of some challenging experiments - working with our first spontaneous sour, forming entirely new styles, and using ingredients anew to us. We're tinkering with jalapeños, flowers, pomegranate, lime and grapefruit juice, and a bunch of juicy hop combinations. Plan to see these ingredients throughout the week. Scroll below to see what we're unveiling. On ahead.

Yakima Valley Hop Collab + Save Summer + New Gear

Yakima Valley Hop Collab + Save Summer + New Gear

YAKIMA VALLEY HOP COLLABORATION + SAVE SUMMER + NEW GEAR

Over Labor Day, our head brewer traveled to the epicenter of all things hops. Learn what he took away (literally) from the experience, along with what's happening during our Scout Series Yakaya Wet Hop Golden Ale collaboration. We've also got updates on our 2nd Annual Save Summer Bike & Brew Fest this weekend, and new gear being released.

Hop production facilities at Loza Farms typically only run for 8 weeks, between mid-August and mid-September. Mmm, fresh Cascade hops.

DID YOU KNOW?

"Washington state’s Yakima Valley is home to one of the most fertile and productive hop growing regions in the world. The hot and cool desert climate, combined with the abundant irrigation provided by the Yakima River, creates an ideal environment for producing this key beer ingredient. The Yakima Valley contains approximately 75 percent of the total United States hop acreage, with an average farm size of 450 acres (182 hectares) accounting for over 77 percent of the total United States hop crop."

OUR COLLABORATION

We traveled to Yakima to do just that - better understand the culture and infrastructure of such an important component of the brewing process - you don't have beer if you don't have hops. Heading up stream to see how hops are manufactured taught us a lot about what goes into not only beer and recipe construction, but how those ingredients come about. On September 23rd, in collaboration with Yakima Valley Hops, Loza Farms, and CHS Farms, we'll be releasing our latest Scout Series - Yakaya Wet Hop Golden Ale. Made with freshly harvested Cascade and Chinook hops - this is the freshest hoppy beer you're likely to try. Please join us at Save Summer Bike & Brew Fest for its release.

SAVE SUMMER BIKE & BREW FEST UPDATE

If you haven't yet heard, the biggest party we've planned to date is happening this Saturday from 12-9PM. Bringing you our first wet hop beer release - alongside live music by Big Bass Ramblers and Yma & The Big Thick, and Fall foods being paired with our beer by Green Scene Organic Market. Further, we're releasing a shirt design just for the event (see below) - get it for a discounted rate of $15, at this event only. Learn more.

NEW GEAR, RELEASED

To the left, our limited edition Save Summer T-Shirt - designed by Rebecca Cahill (learn more about her work at www.rebeccacahill.com). On the right, our fall hat release - made with waxed cotton to keep your head warm and fairly dry while out in the elements.

On ahead,
